Mushroom Kits

For the gourmet who has everything, nothing beats the freshness of homegrown mushrooms. Keystone Homebrew has limited-time offers of ready-to-grow mushroom kits. Each kit comes with illustrated instructions and is guaranteed to produce delicious mushrooms in as little as 2 to 3 weeks.

We are getting fresh deliveries of the following kits before Christmas: Blue Oyster, Elm Oyster, Espresso Oyster, Pearl Oyster, and Shiitake. We'll get more of these, plus the following new varieties in January: Enokitake, Maitake. You can order online (as well as at the store or by phone) and we'll contact you if we have any shortages.

Grow-at-Home Mushroom Kits

Shiitake Mushroom Kit, $30
Just unwrap, put in the supplied humidity tent, and water as directed. Esteemed for both its health-stimulating properties and its culinary value. Shiitake mushrooms can be harvested at two week intervals for up to 16 weeks. A 50–80°F environment is ideal.

Blue Oyster mushroom kit
Blue Oyster Mushrooms, $28
Pleurotus ostreatus (var. columbinus) is a cold-weather (45–65F) variant of the Pearl Oyster Mushroom. It produces beautiful, dark blue mushrooms that lighten in color as they mature. Requires temperatures of approximately 65° Fahrenheit to produce. Freezing is not harmful to this kit.

Elm mushroom kit
Elm Mushrooms, $28
Bouquets of Elm mushrooms (hypsizygus ulmarius, also known as the white elm mushroom or elm oyster) will flourish within two weeks of arrival. A 55-75°F environment is needed. This kit produces a surprisingly abundant crop of tasty mushrooms. We recommend inoculating your garden compost pile with this kit after use. Often gardeners can enjoy continued harvests of Elm mushrooms outdoors in the following months. (Please note that freezing is not harmful to this kit.)

Espresso Oyster Mushrooms, $28
Recycle old newspapers, coffee and espresso grounds by inoculating them with Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Our favorite method is the simplest: just mix the sawdust spawn directly into coffee or espresso grounds. Our Pearl Oyster spawn fruits in a wide temperature range, making it suitable to grow across the country. Kit comes complete with one gallon of Pearl Oyster sawdust spawn and detailed instructions.

Maitake mushroom kit
Maitake Mushrooms, $35.00
Grifola frondosa, also known as “Hen of the Woods,” are succulent and delicious. They are also one of the most popular and widely recognized medicinal mushrooms. A 55-70°F environment is needed for this kit. Simply unwrap and water once or twice a day. Clusters of Maitake will spring forth in 2-3 weeks. After your first harvest, the Maitake Mushroom Patch can be transferred to an outdoor bed for subsequent fruitings, which can occur in 6-12 months.

Enokitake Mushrooms, $29
A veritable forest of small capped, long stemmed Enokitake mushrooms (Flammulina populicola)--often too numerous to count--will emerge from this mushroom kit. Long favored by the Japanese, and known by North Americans as the Winter Mushroom, this species is delightful to grow and eat. A 40-60°F environment is recommended. (To activate, simply place it in your refrigerator.) Like the Pearl Oyster, freezing does not harm this mushroom.
