Goldings are the traditional old English aroma hop. Goldings consist of a group of traditional English varieties that have been cultivated since 1790, including Cobbs, Early Birds, Eastwell Goldings, Bramling, Canterburry Goldings, Kent Goldings, and Mathons (all named after either a hop grower or the parish where they were first cultivated). Most are grown in East Kent with the exception of Mathons and some Canterburry Goldings and Early Birds, which are commonly grown in Hereforshire and Worcestershire. Goldings are sold as East Kent Goldings if grown in East Kent, Kent Goldings if grown in mid-Kent, and Goldings if grown elsewhere. Some Golding varieties are also now being grown in North America.
Recognized as having a quintessential English aroma (characterized as gentle, fragrant, and pleasant). These hops are in demand for copper-hopping and dry hopping classic ales. It has also been found to be usefull in late hopping of lagers when a delicate aroma is required.
